Due to the unprecedented amounts of rainfall over recent days, the Town Council have had to make the difficult decision to cancel the Fathers and Family Fun Day that was due to be held this Sunday 16th June at the Town Park, Sandford Avenue. Unfortunately parts of the park are flooded and the ground conditions elsewhere would make it very difficult to get the event vehicles, other exhibitors and spectators in to the park safely. With so much lying water in the park, the Town Council has also taken the decision to close the park today (Thursday) and cordon off the children’s play areas until the flood water dissipates which with the continued forecast rainfall could take several days.
Town Clerk Danny Chetwood said ‘We shall continue to monitor water levels and want to get the Town Park reopened for the public as soon as it is safe to do so. We desperately wanted the event to go ahead, but we have to prioritise public safety and apologise to the public and exhibitors, for any inconvenience caused. Our thanks go to the organisers of this event, not least Cllr Mike Walker and Cllr Hilary Luff who have put many hours in to trying to make the event a success, but unfortunately we’ve been beaten by this significant weather event’.
The area around the Long Mynd and Stiperstones was the wettest area in the country yesterday and the village of Pennerly just 9 miles to our east, had almost 4cm of rainfall within 24 hours. Other parts of the county have seen the equivalent of almost THREE MONTHS rain since Friday.
