Sandford Avenue Park Survey feb 2021

Flower bed at the junction of Sandford avenue and the A49 by the park

The Survey has closed. Thank you for your responses, ideas and suggestions. Over 600 of you responded and we are now analysing the results…..

Please respond to our important survey. Many people enjoy the Sandford Avenue Recreation Park, or Rec as it is also called. Occupying a prominent position by the A49, the flowers, bowling green and pavilion are an iconic statement of our town’s history and recent heritage. With not enough of us using the park it’s hard to justify the cost of keeping it open, let alone repairing the deteriorating and ageing facilities.

Survey

We are asking local people to tell us what they like about the park, and why they don’t use it more. What ideas do you have for improving it? And do you have suggestions for making it more economically viable?

  1. On the website page about the park you state that it costs £45,000 to maintain but you receive only about £5,000 from those using the bowls, croquet and tennis facilities.
How much of the total cost relates to maintaining the bowls, croquet and tennis facilities? Surely the Town Council has a responsibility to ensure that charges are set each year to recover this cost? Looking at the membership fees for comparable places in the West Midlands, for instance Edgbaston and Kenilworth, would suggest that the membership fees in Church Stretton are extremely low.

  2. The park is a Prime Business Advertising location, next to the very busy A49.

Erect huge advertising boards on the edge of the park, parallel to the A49, directed at the passing traffic.

Invite companies/organisations to advertise their business on the advertising boards.

The advertising income will pay for the maintenance of the park.

Establish a youth club in the park, next to the old BMX track.
