Thank you

Thank you for your responses to the Housing Needs Questionnaire earlier this year. 964 of you responded. This is an excellent 40% response rate providing us with powerful evidence to support discussions with Shropshire Council who make the final housing decisions.

Results bring Clear Ideas

Designed to help us to assess the housing needs of The Strettons, these results give us clear ideas of the prices, type, size and tenure of houses and homes people require.

A different questionnaire was also completed by a small number of non-resident people who work in town which provides us with more rounded ideas of needs.

New Evidence

With this new evidence we are now in a much stronger position when discussing needs with Shropshire Council Planning Department and developers.

  1. I have two comments on what is clearly a thorough survey that will add much to the planning process. I am sure the council has realised the points I make but I add them in a cautionary, supportive spirit.
    1. Notwithstanding the excellent response rate, there is still a risk of serious bias from the possible under representation of social groups and housing groups in the sample. It is well established that lower income groups normally provide lower response rates to such questionnaires. It would be useful to have some independent metric of housing types in Church Stretton to gauge, if only roughly, whether in fact there is a serious bias in the results that underrepresents some groups in Church Stretton.
    2. The data are clear, well presented and thorough. However, I caution that the central issue of housing need is not adequately reflected in the approach to data presentation. The focus needs to be on the changes that are needed in each of the housing groups. Data on this is partially available on the lower left hand section of page 2 but it needs to be the central focus. The breakdown is complicated and needs a graphic presentation of the combinations of key data elements.
