I am pleased to have this opportunity to send a message to the people of our wonderful town at this time of year.
Looking back over Christmas messages from recent years, I have noticed that predictions as to when the future of our library and swimming pool will be resolved, have proven to be totally inaccurate. As I write this message, we still await the results from the current Shropshire Council processes and I very much hope that 2019 will be the year, that we finally hear positive news regarding the future of these valued local assets. I shall however avoid making another prediction!
Concentrating on Church Stretton Town Council and outcomes that we can deliver for our community, we ran a Father's and Family Fun Day in June and we were very pleased that over 500 people came in to the town park and enjoyed themselves with their families, despite the indifferent weather. Many messages were received congratulating us on the event and asking for a similar event in 2019 and we are now planning towards this.
The Christmas lights appeal was incredibly well supported by the majority of our residents, local businesses and organisations. Such generosity has meant that this Christmas, a further £5000 of festive lighting has been installed in High Street and Sandford Avenue. Residents and business owners have commented to me, that the lights “make you feel better” and “many people want to come into the town centre, to see the lights” and I know that other Councillors have received similar comments. We are therefore very happy to support something that clearly means so much to the residents and visitors to our town. Look out for the collection boxes in local shops this Christmas, the proceeds from which will go directly in to festive lighting.
Finally I would like to send a special message of thanks to the people who volunteer for us and other organisations in the town. I'm always amazed by the willingness and enthusiasm of volunteers in Church Stretton and you add significant value to the town. Well done everyone, your efforts truly are appreciated.
I wish you and your loved ones a truly happy and peaceful Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year.
Cllr Michael Braid, Town Mayor
